I may or may not be starting a new collection

Someone told me that it looks like I’m starting a new collection dedicated to technical handbooks. I can’t confirm or deny that statement, but the truth is that when I find a book like this, with good useful information very well explained, I usually can’t resist buying it. To add to my lack of resistance, someone in the second-hand bookstore world decided that this type of books belong to an inferior caste, so the price is usually quite convincing.
After the last batch, I found these five to add to my library.
One on Handspinning and Wool Combing in Egypt and Sudan, by Grace Mary Crowfoot, which isn’t very good when it comes to the illustrations, but it makes up with the very precise written instructions and deep investigation she made on several spinning techniques, that I haven’t seen explained with such detail anywhere else.
The second one is a handbook for the fabric manufacturer (in portuguese, the Manual do Fabricante de Tecidos), which is quite extensive and although it is more dedicated to the industrial production, each chapter has a small introduction to the artisanal process, which is quite useful. The book being from the beggining of the XXth century, the “industrial” part is actually useful too, because I didn’t own any book that would teach how to load the warp and the weft on a jacquard loom like these, or explained the punch card system clearly, so I have one now.
The third one is about shoemaking (in portuguese, the Manual do Sapateiro). It starts with a deep analysis of the foot itself, goes on to talk about how to design shoe patterns, how to pick adequate leather for shoemaking and all the different construction details.
The fourth one, Canework, is about basketry, and although it is my second one on the theme, this one was written by Charles Crampton, which was a master basket maker and wrote all kinds of practical textbooks on the craft, so I take it as a valuable addition to the collection.
The last one, I found at at a flea market and just had to buy it: it’s about canoe making and it includes fold-outs with plans for several models, all designed by the author. Too good to let go.

Alguém me disse que parece que estou a começar uma colecção nova dedicada a livros técnicos. Não posso confirmar ou desmentir, mas a verdade é que quando encontro um livro destes, com informação bem recolhida e extensa, tenho pouca capacidade de resistência à compra. Ainda para mais, alguém no mundo dos alfarrabistas decidiu que este tipo de livros pertence a uma casta inferior e, por isso, encontro-os muitas vezes a preços agradáveis.
Depois do último grupo, trouxe estes cinco para acrescentar à minha biblioteca temática.
O primeiro é sobre fiação no Egipto e no Sudão, escrito pela Gracy Mary Crowfoot, e apesar de não estar recheado de boas ilustrações como eu gosto, as descrições extensas que ela faz das diferentes técnicas que investigou compensam.
O segundo é o Manual do Fabricante de Tecidos, da velhinha Biblioteca de Instrução Profissional. Embora seja mais dedicado aos métodos industriais, todos os capítulos têm uma breve descrição dos métodos artesanais, o que o torna útil. Como é um livro do início do século XX, a definição de “industrial” está dentro do que me agrada, porque chega a explicar como instalar a teia e a trama neste tipo de teares jacquard e como funciona o sistema de cartões que define os padrões tecidos. Ainda não tinha nenhum livro que me explicasse isso.
O manual do Sapateiro, também da mesma colecção do anterior, começa com uma profunda análise do pé, parte para explicar como se desenham moldes para sapatos, escolher as melhores peles para calçado e acaba com as técnicas de construção.
O quarto livro é o Canework, um sobre cestaria escrito pelo Charles Crampton. Embora este seja o meu segundo livro sobre o tema, este foi escrito por um mestre cesteiro que escreveu vários livros sobre o tema, por isso é um bom acrescento à colecção.
O último, dedicado à construção de canoas e kaiaks encontrei na feira da vandoma. Claro que não consegui resistir a um livro que traz desdobráveis com desenhos técnicos para diferentes modelos, criados pelo próprio autor. Não importa se nunca vou construir um barco na minha vida, tinha de o ter.
